"Remember, remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason, why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot......"

The 5th November marks Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night.
Guy Fawkes Night originates from the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, a failed conspiracy by a group of provincial English Catholics to assassinate the Protestant King James I of England and replace him with a Catholic head of state.

In the immediate aftermath of the arrest of Guy Fawkes, caught guarding a cache of explosives placed beneath the House of Lords.

The bonfires celebrated King James' survival of the treason plot and are still observed today, the festivities now include firework displays, sharing hot food and drinks and fairground rides.

The theme of the famous conspiracy has been used in many stories, rhymes, poems and in more recent cinematography, the film V for Vendetta.

Enjoy the fireworks and stay safe!

The Gunpowder Treason and plot;
I see of no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes,
'Twas his intent.
To blow up the King and the Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below.
Poor old England to overthrow."
